Nepal's Political Landscape Sees Significant Partnership Forged By Media Personality and Former Musician Mayor

In a significant move ahead of next year's national polls, a pair of high-profile figures in Nepali politics have teamed up. This alliance emerges in the aftermath of large-scale and fatal youth-led demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually led to the removal of the sitting government.

A Commitment to Tackle Young People's Demands

Media figure Rabi Lamichhane, who leads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a one-time rapper, have publicly vowed to focus on the grievances highlighted by the younger generation. This promise follows the violent anti-graft unrest that occurred in September, which led to considerable loss of life.

"Consensus should not be as the leader seeks, it must be what the nation requires," stated Lamichhane following the agreement was finalized.

The September revolt was sparked by public frustration over a temporary government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a catalyst for deeper resentment stemming from a long period of economic stagnation and persistent allegations of systemic political corruption.

Terms of the New Political Agreement

According to the formal agreement, the roles for the imminent election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the leader of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the alliance's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election scheduled for 5 March.

  • Rabi Lamichhane: A popular 51-year-old television personality, he founded the RSP in 2022, channeling broad discontent with the country's older political leadership. He has previously served in the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently released on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
  • Balendra Shah (Balen): The 35-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central player in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the ousted administration was removed.

Wider Political Discussions Taking Place

In a separate development, the sitting interim prime minister over the weekend held meetings with a number of leading political leaders. These talks included ex- prime ministers and the heads of other mainstream parties, marking the first such dialogue since the time of the protests.

Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a free and fair election is a shared responsibility. The statement affirmed the government's commitment to ensuring a safe and open environment for the polls, adding that efforts are being made to eliminate any uncertainty.
