Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when numerous of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
The operational halt led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's primary metropolis and near the frontier with Belarus.
At least 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of illegal tobacco products have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to border security officials.
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are nothing new in neighboring countries."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Polish territory, which also borders Belarus, has recorded more than numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the weather devices.
When questioned about why smugglers utilize a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that this activity become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
These airspace violations occur during an era marked by increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to accelerate discussions about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
