McDonald's has taken down a holiday commercial created using generative AI after encountering significant public disapproval.

The 45-second ad was developed using AI video tools and was originally published on the YouTube channel for McDonald's Netherlands back on 6 December.

Social Media Criticism and Removal

Soon after it aired, audiences online denounced the employment of AI in the film. A number of described it as "creepy" and "poorly edited".

"This experience is an important learning as we examine the proper utilization of Artificial Intelligence," said a statement from McDonald's Netherlands.

The advert was created for McDonald's by Netherlands-based agency TBWA\Neboko and US production company The Sweetshop. It depicted various situations that often go badly during the holidays, using the theme "not the most wonderful time of the year".

A Growing Trend of AI-Generated Ads

Commercials that include AI-created content have become a increasing phenomenon among large companies, particularly for the Christmas campaign season.

  • Another beverage giant has also released back-to-back AI-created Christmas ads.
  • Technical Challenges: Since segments created using generative AI are susceptible to distort the more extended they are, the majority of such clips tend to be roughly six to 10 seconds in length.
  • Broader Implications: The ad also sparked fears about automation in the creative industry, with some commenters noting it might affect opportunities for production staff.

Response from the Creators

Following the commercial being pulled, a producer's head, Melanie Bridge, spoke in support of the advert.

According to her, the development took "seven weeks" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then edited in post-production "just as we would on any traditional production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," she said. "We consider it a finished piece."

Mixed Public Reception

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was predominantly panned, the sentiment for other AI-generated holiday ads has been divisive.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday spot from Coca-Cola reportedly received a 61% "positive feedback" from online commenters.

However, other businesses have also faced criticism for using the technique in advertising. Luxury brand Valentino, for example, was criticized for ads that critics described as "low-effort" and "disturbing".

The situation highlights the ongoing debate within the advertising and creative sectors about the balance between AI efficiency and human craftsmanship.
